When most people in Oklahoma think about tornado season, they tend to think of the spring time. This is true, The months of March – June is typically considered, by most, to be the most active time of the year. However, something people often fail to notice is that the Fall season doesn’t just bring cooler weather and pumpkin flavored beverages, it is also comes with tornadoes. Did you know that outside of our typical spring storm season listed previously, that the month with the highest amount of tornadoes recorded is October!! Since 1950, there have been 129 tornadoes reported throughout the entire state of Oklahoma. That comes out to a two tornadoes a year average. This occurs happens when the jet stream shifts farther south into the United States after retreating northward during the summer months. An active jet stream pattern provides the deep wind shear necessary for super cells and large outbreaks of severe storms.
are you starting to panic? Ok, well hold on for just a second. Fall tornadoes are slightly less likely to be strong or violent than their spring counterparts. About 20% of fall tornadoes are rated F2 or stronger compared to 28% in the spring. Catastrophic F4 or F5 tornadoes are rare outside of the spring season. That being said, damaging and deadly tornadoes can happen at any time of the year.
F5 storm shelters is here to ease the fear of severe weather. We have stores in both Oklahoma City and Tulsa that services the entire state and beyond. Make sure your family is safe whenever the sirens sound. Whether it be in Spring or Fall. Stay Alive, Call F5!

Here at F5 Storm Shelters, we get asked all the time about where we install our shelters in the garage and why we use that location. When installing an underground garage storm shelter in a customers garage floor, our installers our instructed to install the shelter about 1 ft in from the garage door. We also choose to come about 2.5-3ft in from the exterior wall. The main reason we choose to start the install so close to the garage door is so that the customer can use their storm shelter easier. Most peoples garages are a little over 20 inches deep. By putting the shelter so close to the garage door, it allows most people the ability to pull their vehicle up far enough so that they can get inside the tornado shelter without having to back their car out of the garage. The last thing that you would want to happen during a storm is to back your car out of the garage in order to get inside the storm shelter, a tornado never comes, it starts hailing and then you are out of pocket $500-$100 for your car deductible.
We bring the shelter 2.5 ft in from the exterior wall so that the shelter is centered on whatever bay you choose to place it. All the lids on every size shelter we sell are 3 ft wide. This limits you from having to drive over the lids on a daily basis. We strongly recommend that every customer should try to avoid driving over the actual lids. They are equipt to handle such impact, but we don’t think it is a good decision long term. Over the years, wear and tear could cause the lid to dent in, making it hard to open the front lid.
Putting the shelter so close to the garage door also makes it easier for our installers to install the storm shelter. For the customer, this means we are less likely to ding your property with our equipment.
If you have any questions about our storm shelters, please don’t hesitate to call us. Call (405) 824-7209 if you are in the OKC metro, or call (918) 970-4770 if you are in Tulsa. You can also find more info on our website at www.f5stormsheltersok.com.

We recently discovered a poll on weather.com of the top 10 cities most frequently hit by tornadoes. As you would probably expect, the state of Oklahoma was well represented in the poll.
Tulsa ranked number 6 in the poll. “Tulsa, like Oklahoma City, is in the heart of what was once considered the traditional “Tornado Alley.” Tulsa lies at the crossroads of the Great Plains and the Ozark Mountains so it is a prime area for storm chasers as they follow tornadoes across the flat topography of central Oklahoma.”
Tulsa Co. Tornado History
- Total Track (1962-2011): 828/sq. mi.**
- Busiest Month (1950-2012): May with 19 average tornadoes
- EF-2 Tornado Hit Tulsa in 2010 and 2013
Following Tulsa, Oklahoma City came in number 7 on the list.
Oklahoma City Tornado History
- Total Track (1962-2011): 806.2/sq. mi.**
- 2.3 tornadoes each year/1,000 sq. mi.
- Oklahoma County has been 101 times since 1950
The good news for Oklahomans is we have showrooms in both Tulsa and Oklahoma City. Come by and see us!
